Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven

Book Summary

The book "Make Your Bed" is based on the lessons and experiences that Admiral William H. McRaven, a retired American Navy admiral, learned throughout his life and service in the U.S. Navy. In this book, he presents these lessons separately along with his memories from his time in the Navy, providing explanations for each of them. Before delving further into this work, it is worth noting that it was one of the New York Times bestsellers in 2017. With the title of the book, the author aims to remind readers that change begins with simple and basic tasks, such as making your bed, and from there, one should tackle overcoming hardships.

In his work, McRaven introduces ten principles that he has found effective in transforming oneself and the surrounding world for the better, intending to guide all those who are serious—not just out of interest but to give meaning to their lives—toward making improvements in their lives. A particularly remarkable point in this book is that although it is considered a motivational work, the lessons presented by the author are rooted in the harrowing situations he experienced during his efforts and missions—moments that leave readers breathless when he recounts them. By discussing his personal and professional life, his experiences in leadership, and navigating ups and downs, McRaven seeks to remind us of the importance of valuing each moment ahead and not surrendering in various situations.

He beautifully narrates when he confronts readers with his personal realities and uses artistic imagery to evoke empathy among his audience. His utmost effort is based on the truth that many tasks we perceive as difficult are not truly hard, and what may seem simple and insignificant at first glance is indeed important. Considering the impacts that these small things collectively have on our lives can significantly enhance one's understanding of their control over various events in life. The simplicity of this book instills such a spirit in the reader that they will realize navigating the challenging twists and turns of life can become easier through mundane actions, which in turn will create an indescribable spirit and energy in everyone.

Book Quotes

You need people who will help you in tough situations; you cannot paddle a boat alone.
If you can't do the small things right, you'll never do the big things right.
In life, you will face many circuses and pay for your failures, but if you have perseverance and let these failures teach and strengthen you, you will be ready to endure the toughest moments of life.
On the path to greatness, you will encounter many sharks, whether it's bullying or your personal fears, but to succeed, all you need to do is stand up to them.
Life is a struggle, and the possibility of failure always exists, but those who live in fear of failure, hardship, or embarrassment will never reach their true potential. Without pushing aside your limitations, without occasionally keeping your head down, and without having great courage, you will never understand what is truly possible in your life.
I realized that past failures have made me stronger. They have taught me that no one is immune to making mistakes. True leaders must learn from their failures, use those lessons to motivate themselves, and not be afraid to try again or make the next hard decision.
Making my bed properly did not bring me luck in receiving a reward because it was something expected of me; it was my first task every day, and doing it correctly was very important. This act demonstrated discipline and attention to detail and reminded me at the end of the day that I had done something well—something to take pride in, even if it was a very small task.
Life is hard and exhausting, but those who are always in fear and dread of failure and difficulties can never reach their core capacities.
They all understood that life is tough, and sometimes there are little things you can do to influence the outcome of your day.
The Army lieutenant colonel responsible for the rescue mission informed me that they would need to carry out a dangerous attack during the day. The worst part was that the only way to successfully conduct the operation was to land three rescue helicopters in that small area. We discussed other tactical options, but the colonel was exactly right: if you have a chance to surprise the enemy, it's better to operate at night, but this time it wasn’t like that, and if we didn’t act quickly, the hostages would be moved or killed.
You can only understand what is possible in your life when you have enough courage.
Backing down has never made anything easier.

While browsing YouTube one day, I came across Admiral William H. McRaven’s remarkable commencement address from 2014 at the University of Texas at Austin. Having taught at the university level for nearly 50 years, I have listened to many graduation speeches, but this one stood out as one of the most influential and eloquent I have ever heard. After learning more about him, I discovered he had written a book titled "Make Your Bed," so I decided to buy a copy. In this book, which includes his motivational speech at the end, Admiral McRaven presents ten principles that serve as a roadmap for leading a productive life while facing and overcoming life’s many challenges.

Each short chapter in this book tells a story illustrating a specific characteristic or life trait the author aims to instill in the reader. The author draws on examples from his 37 years as a Navy SEAL, particularly his six months of intensive training at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in California, to describe how he learned and applied these principles throughout his naval career. To dispel the notion that one must serve in the armed forces to benefit from these principles, Admiral McRaven emphasizes, “I have a few suggestions that may help you on your way to a better world. While these lessons were learned during my time in the military, I assure you it matters not whether you ever served a day in uniform.”

This short book is powerful and thought-provoking. It was written by someone who has navigated many challenges in life, consistently finding ways to overcome obstacles and move forward. Its a book you can keep close and return to often. You may find yourself reading specific chapters whenever you seek inspiration or guidance. My copy always remains on my desk.

In summary, this book is one that everyone should buy and read. The world would be a better place if everyone lived by the standards and guidance offered in this book.
