Looking for Alaska by John Green

About the Book

In his debut novel, "Looking for Alaska" John Green has crafted a beautiful story with diverse characters. Although the protagonist is a teenager, it is a remarkable work for all age groups. Miles Halter, as the main character, is not very satisfied with his life and thinks he needs to find a solution to escape his current situation.

What comes to his mind is attending a boarding school, which leads him to meet a girl named Alaska. Alaska is quite different from her peers and exhibits strange thoughts and behaviors. Miles becomes infatuated with her, and their acquaintance not only creates an emotional connection but also helps him step toward his desires and distance himself from his previous state of mind.

One of Miles' hobbies is memorizing quotes from great figures, and through various adventures with his friends, these quotes serve as a means for Green to delve into the world of teenagers and address their concerns, such as death, romantic relationships, and love. As the story unfolds, after narrating the ups and downs that Alaska, Halter, and their friends experience, a secret is revealed that profoundly impacts the lives of the main characters and leads them into a new phase.

Book Quotes

They love their hair because they are not smart enough to like something more attractive. When adults say with that sly and foolish smile, "Teenagers think they are invincible," they don't realize how right they are. We never feel hopeless because nothing can break us irreversibly. We think we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all forms of energy, we can only change our shape, size, and outward appearance. When they grow old, they forget this, and the fear of failure and loss takes hold of them.
Florida was very hot and humid. It was so hot that clothes stuck to you like tape, and sweat streamed down your forehead, dripping into your eyes. But the heat was only in the open air, and I only went outside when I needed to move from one building with air conditioning to another building that also had air conditioning.
This weather could not prepare me for the intense heat one faces twenty-five miles from Birmingham, Alabama, at the Culver Creek Preparatory School. My parents' SUV was parked a few steps away from the door of room forty-three in the dormitory, right in the middle of the grass.
But every time I took a few steps under the sun towards my room or the car, the rays of the sun pierced through my clothes and burned my skin with such merciless intensity that it made me think of the fires of hell and truly fear it.
